Principal's Message

DECEMBER 12, 2016

Dear MBMS Parents,

It is hard to believe, but we are winding down the first semester.

We are excited to announce the launch of the Counselor’s Corner on the MBMS website.  Our MBMS counselors have worked hard to develop a site that will provide assistance for families and will maintain a blog with great relevant information throughout the year.  Please check out this great resource!  http://www.mbmswaves.com/counseling

The first semester ends on December 22.  Teachers will finalize grades for the semester on the first Friday back from break – January 13.  After that time, you will be able to check the historical grades section of PowerSchool to see the official semester grades for your child.  We will also send home hard copies of report cards, but this may take up to two weeks, so for immediate information PowerSchool is your best source.  I will send an email when those grades are available.

We are aware that there is some confusion in PowerSchool right now.  There is a glitch in the system that is showing grades for trimester one and two for our year-long classes.  When students log in they see three sets of grades – one for trimester one and two, and one for the fall semester.  Trimester one and two only pertains to our Wheel elective classes.  If you child is enrolled in any other class, only the semester grade is applicable.  We are working on getting the system fixed, but wanted to clarify in the interim.

Have a wonderful week!

Dear MBMS Families,

Thank you very much to the 61% of you who have joined our PTA and have donated to the annual appeal! Your generous contributions help fund all of the “things” that are necessary to make our students’ educational experiences fulfilling and enriching.
The goal for the PTA is 100% membership participation.  61% is good, but I think we can do even better.  If you are one of the 39% yet to join and donate, you still have time!
PTA generously supports MBMS in so many important ways.  Without your generous donations, we would not have all of the important items below:
--Teacher & Room Parent Supplies
--Additional Technology
--Character Development
--Student Programs
--Campus Improvements
--Enrichment Programs

ONLY PTA Members will receive access to our online directory for your child!   Please consider joining and contributing to the MBMS PTA today.

Sincerely,

Kim Linz

OCTOBER 17 2016
Dear MBMS families,

This week marks the end of the first quarter for MBMS.  The time has certainly flown by!  All teachers will be updating PowerSchool by October 28 to reflect student grades for the first quarter.  We will not send paper progress reports for the quarter because the semester is our official grading period, and by the time we send a paper copy of grades they would already be outdated.  We do, however, want to make sure all students and parents are informed of progress at this point. When you log in you will see semester and trimester grades. This is because our wheel classes are scheduled in three sections, so those grades still show as a trimester grade.  If you are in any class aside from the wheel the grades should match, but you can ignore the trimester grade and just look at the semester grade. I will send a reminder email on October 28 to check PowerSchool for updated grades as well.

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s grades please remember that your first point of contact is the teacher.  Our teachers are invested in the success of your children, and as a school we believe in the parent and teacher partnership.  If there continue to be concerns after the teacher meeting and any assistance provided, your counselor can also be of assistance.  The teacher is always the best contact for determining how best to assist your child, however.

Drop off and pick up for 1500 students is always a challenge.  We are thankful for the ability for some many o four students to walk or bike, and that so many families carpool.  We do want to remind those that drive not to idle your car while waiting.  We are hearing from homeowners in the neighborhood that the exhaust from cars is impacting the air quality in their homes and affecting the young children in the house for the duration of pick up and drop off.  We appreciate your assistance with this.

I want to thank our MBMS community for the support, feedback, and engagement in the start of the year.  I am proud of all we have done to support our students and build an environment where learning can thrive.  There is still an exciting year ahead of us, but it is always important to stop and reflect throughout the year.  Without the work and support of the entire community, we would not be able to accomplish all we have so far.

Have a wonderful week,

OCTOBER 2 2016
Dear MBMS Families,

It is hard to believe we are in the first week of October already.  The fall is flying by!

Hopefully all of you received my email about the graffiti we had on campus this last weekend.  While upsetting, we are moving forward by repairing the mural and restoring our beautiful campus.  The trash on campus is significantly better than in previous years, and I am proud of our students for the pride they are showing.

I want to make our families aware of some of the resources we provide as a school community at MBMS. Our newest resource is the MBMS Families Connected website (mbmsfamiliesconnected.org).  On this site you will find information and resources on teenage development, how to support your child in positive social development, how to help your child handle stress, bullying, and other teenage emotional issues.  The website is continuously growing, and is a useful resource for you and your child.  Families who have used the site speak highly of its usefulness and effectiveness.

If your child needs assistance with homework, MBMS provides a daily homework club from 3:00 - 4:00 in room 126 Monday through Thursday.  It is a drop in program where students work independently in a supervised room with no cost to families.  We also partner with Study Hut on Wednesday morning late starts for study support from 8:00 - 9:00 a.m. in room 126.  This is also a drop in program with support from Study Hut tutors with no cost to families.  We hope these services are helpful to your family if your child needs a little extra time or structure.

Have a wonderful week and enjoy Hometown Fair this weekend!

SEPTEMBER 12 2016
Dear MBMS Families,

I hope you are all planning to join us for Back to School Night this Tuesday, September 13.  Your child will be bringing home a copy of their schedule Tuesday after school for you to follow. In case the schedule does not make that long trip home, your child’s homeroom teacher will have a second copy.  Please make sure you find out from your child where to go for homeroom.  There will be administrators and students available to give directions, but it helps to know the teacher and room number for your destination.

The evening begins with the first general MBMS PTA meeting for the year at 5:20 p.m. in the MPR.   At 6:00 p.m. you will continue your evening in your child’s homeroom.  You will follow your child’s schedule for the evening so you are able to meet all of your child’s teachers.  It is an important night to attend because you will receive valuable information about each teacher’s class and expectations.  Even if you have had a child with a teacher previously we recommend attending because there may have been changes in the curriculum.

Please remember that this is a night for teachers to share important information.  Teachers will not be able to discuss your child individually or meet with you individually due to the time constraints, but the details they will share will help you and your child in a successful year.

I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday evening!

Sincerely,
