MBUSD Calendars - Please review

The Board has adopted a revised calendar for the 2016-17 school year and new calendars for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.  I have included key information about them below.
The new calendars are available on the District Website Calendar page.

Here are some of the changes we made to the 2016-17 calendar.  I realize these changes may cause challenges to some families, but I do believe they result in an improved calendar.  These changes were recommended by parents and teachers, and approved through the negotiations process with our teachers’ union.

The start date remains the same – Monday, August 29
We now have two non-student days in October – October 3 and October 12
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is now a non-student day
Winter Break now begins on Friday, December 23
Instead of two three-day weekends, there is now a five-day weekend
Spring Break is extended one day
The last day of school is now June 15, 2017

We also have new calendars for 2017-18 and 2018-19.  Some facts and rationale behind these new calendars:

Like the 2016-17 calendar, the first semester ends before Winter Break, so students will not have to study for finals during Winter Break
School starts two weeks before Labor Day
Both the Thanksgiving and Mid-Winter February Breaks are each a full week
School ends in the 2nd full week of June, one week earlier than in previous calendars, in order to prevent student conflicts with camps and educational opportunities

On the same Calendar Page on our website, you will see a “District Events” tab, which will contain more detailed information, such as minimum days and Open Houses and other events.  Each school’s website also contains more detailed events.
